Doughnut Disciple

Last week, a little voice inside my head insisting I eat several doughnuts. Not wanting to be a fatty, I kept trying to ignore it, but it simply wouldn’t go away. Was it God? Chris Farley? (Too soon?) Perhaps just schizophrenia? In any case, when a voice tells you to do something, you just do it, right? So I decided to make it my mission to study the best donuts in Brooklyn and share with you my divine wisdom. After eating a menagerie of donuts from Brooklyn’s heaviest hitters, I believe I’ve achieved doughnut Nirvana. Here’s the scoop:

PETER PAN BAKERY (727 Manhattan Ave.)

Peter Pan Bakery

Vibe: This adorable old school bakery has been a long-time favorite of Greenpoint residents. There are no frills here. Just grab your damn pastries and go. It’s basically the refreshing opposite of a hipster bespoke doughnut shop.

Flavors: Every semi-weird yet traditional flavor is available, from red velvet to toasted coconut. The cinnamon sugar doughnut was my personal favorite.

Overall Take: This no-nonsense place gets high marks in my book. The doughnuts taste great and at the end of the day, that’s what matters.

DUN-WELL (222 Montrose Ave)

Vibe: This semi-busy Bushwick shop seems like a hipster haven. Also, the donuts are vegan.

Flavors: My goodness this place is creative! Dun-well gets a gold star from creativity. From peanut butter and jelly to strawberry kiwi, it seems like you could have a whole meal made of donuts here.

Overall Take: Unfortunately for me (and you, dear readers) the classic glaze and several other flavors were out of stock by the time I arrived here at about 12:30PM. Still, the doughnuts I did try were very tasty and the flavors were incredibly unique. Some may have been a touch too sweet for my taste.

DOUGH (305 Franklin Ave)

Vibe: When I went, this tiny shop was ridiculously crowded and there was a line around the block. Annoying, but still a good sign. Because they’re so busy, they’re baking constantly throughout the day which ensures you’ll never get a stale doughnut.

Flavors: The different flavor options at Dough were out of control, and they definitely had the widest variety of all three shops I tried. Notable flavors included hibiscus, mojito, and my personal favorite – salted chocolate caramel.

Overall take: This place gets the gold medal for best donuts in my book! The donuts are incredibly fluffy and gooey, and they basically melt in your mouth. Now please excuse me while I die and go to doughnut heaven.
